Travel report January-March 2023
About 3 years ago the construction of this evangelical church, Glory Outreach Assembly church in Murera Ruiru, Kenya started. Somehow Bishop David Munyiri Thagana heard about our foundation and asked us to support them financially. A special request was made to create toilets and showers on the second and third floors of this building for children who go to Sunday school and other activities that the church organizes for children. It has become a new project for us, in addition to the existing one. And not just any job.
A meeting was first planned with the bishop, the pastors and the contractor. The plans had to be discussed. A contractor had to be brought in because it is a small municipality that does not yet have enough volunteers to do the work themselves. Initially only financial support was requested. However, our policy is that we order all the materials ourselves and supervise the work. This way we can be sure that all the sponsored money is actually spent.

De douche- en toiletruimtes zijn samen. Voor de duidelijkheid. Je hebt eerst het douchegedeelte nadat je de deur gesloten hebt en daarachter het toilet.
Of course, there must also be water for both the showers and toilets. A 5000 liter storage tank was purchased. This is placed on top of the roof and “it’s done”.
This project has been closed for our organization.
Our current projects
We support 10 children who go to school in Kenya. This time we mention the name of Ken Muiruri. We supported him to follow a hairdressing course. His internship went well and will be completed in May this year. During their internship, the students go to children’s homes and get haircuts for free. After a mechanic, which we wrote about last time, now a hairdresser. We are quite proud of that. On the one hand their perseverance and on the other hand that our foundation was able to help with this.
And further
A group of 12 elderly people, over 70 years old, who live in rural areas and are all widows, have also asked for our help. We couldn’t say “no” to that, so we went to the store and looked together to see what was needed.
There is plenty of choice, but the finances are not always sufficient to buy it yourself. Luckily we had that option.
Maybe it seems like not much happened in the two months we were there. It is not the case that, like in the Netherlands, everything is close together and can be ordered and arranged just as quickly. Because we search and buy everything ourselves, it takes a lot more time. Of course, the Kenyan culture, the heat and the working conditions also play a role. But what we wanted to do happened, of course, partly thanks to all the sponsors. Thank you to everyone who made it financially possible.
The fact that we have returned safely to the Netherlands does not mean that it is “finished”. Requests are coming in and we will have to make a choice about what we can do next time. Now we can say “It was good” and focus on the next journey.
